Howard Dean is a Blind Hog

Unfortunately this is not it.

Growing up in the South, I’ve noticed in passing that elitist liberal types have never been too fond of us. Used to be, it was the occasional op-ed piece at the New York Times referencing us (white southern males) as illegitimate, uneducated hicks.

Over the last few years though, the insults have become more entertaining if not more subtle. Now, we are the intolerant, oppressive knuckle-draggers who hate anyone, anything and any action that is not like us, for us and in keeping with our puritanical belief system.

Howard Dean’s recent remark that southerners have to quit basing their votes on “race, guns, God and gays” proved finally that the Democratic party has completely lost touch with reality.

This is how I see it:

  • We don’t care where you worship (or if you do). While I do believe that each of us will have to answer individually to the Almighty for our actions, I’ve got enough problems with my own sin to worry about yours. As a matter of fact, I think we would do well to revisit this whole notion of “legislating morality.”
  • While we support every amendment in the Bill of Rights, we take issue with your attempts to trample the second amendment. After all, even a well-educated (but apparently illiterate) federal judge should be able to understand the phrase “The right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed.” For us, registering a firearm with any government entity is anathema to anyone who as ever actually read the Constitution of the United States
  • We don’t care who you sleep with, or when. This isn’t just some macho “I don’t care what you do” attitude, this is truly an “I don’t give a rat’s ass” about your sexual behavior. However, most folks around here think it is in poor taste to publicly discuss anything that can be traced back to bodily fluids, no matter who you swap them with.

This is what it boils down to:

We just want to be left alone. We won’t try and tell you how to live if you won’t try and force us to pay for the consequences of your actions.

For some of us, Freedom and Opportunity mean the chance to start a business and succeed or fail based on our own merit. Don’t insult our intelligence by claiming that we are voting against our economic self interest if we don’t vote for the party who will raise taxes and regulate us into oblivion.
